Hippo on boat safari

Safari Activities

Mpingo Lodge Selous offers a variety of safari activities our guests can take on. Take a look below and let us know in the booking page if you would like any of these included in your stay.

Bird Watching: The early bird catches the worm!

Catch the many species of birds that fly and chirp around our camp. The Litte Egreat, African Open Billed Stork, Lilac-breasted Roller to name a few.

Most birds come out in the early morning so, we recommend bird watching between 06:30a.m. to 08:00a.m.

Boat Safari: Finish the day with a relaxing sail down the Rufiji River!

The sunsets are beautiful and the hippos are cool enough to come out of the water! This safari gives endless opportunities to watch the birds, crocs and the stunning colours in the sky after a long day of adventure. Our guests will be able to take a break on a beautiful sandy island where you can watch the sunset with a cool drink in your hands.

The boat safari starts at 04:00p.m. to 06:00p.m. The boat departs from Mpingo Lodge Selous to the sandy island.

Bush Walking Safari: Explore the trails of Mpingo!

Our bush walking safari through our trails will give you the opportunity to learn about the indigenous lands of Rufiji and a unique chance to meet some of the natives. They invite you to learn about their day to day and lifestyle such as cooking using their local stoves.

Mpingo is a community, we wouldn’t be able to do most of what we do without the indigenous people of Rufiji! You don’t want to exclude this on your list of safari activities!

Camping Riverside: talk about sleeping sounds!

If you wish to be a little more close to nature, this activity is right for you! Guests can choose to camp on our secluded, quiet camp area overlooking the river.

Campers are guaranteed a sound night accompanied by the sound of the Rufiji river flowing by. Not to mention the clear starry sky and bright moonlight.

Campers can set up their tents or use Mpingo’s tents (there will be additional charges if you need one of Mpingo’s tents).

Game Drive: Take a ride with us through the Selous Game Reserve!

This classic game drive through the Nyerere National Park (formerly known as Selous Game Reserve) gives you the chance to see an abundance of animals in their habitat!

Mpingo is proud to have the only female Game Guide in Nyerere National Park, Aminata. The Safari is full majestic animals and exciting views. Our guests will be able to take a break and have lunch within the park.
