World Elephant Day

Did you know? Elephants can thrive living close to human beings? It is true and here’s how a communities in Tanzania are helping.

In 2021, concerns about farmers getting less crops due to elephant raids were at an increase. This concern came at a time where elephant conservation efforts were also being called for. And to our splendid surprise, a solution to accommodate both efforts was made.  The Bees for Elephants Project launched in 2022. The Tanzanian Elephant Foundation (TEF) partnered with multiple foundations to install beehive fences in 3 Tanzanian communities; Kisiwani, Kisemo and Kisaki.

The protection the farms get from the beehive fences reduce elephant crop raiding and hence any potential dangerous altercations with elephants. Protecting the lives of both while ensuring they still have the space to eat and farm food.

This is just one of multiple efforts across Tanzania to protect elephants. May we all remember our responsibilities to them and our environments in our roles. Happy Elephant Day from Mpingo Lodge Selous!
